Deadly dog parasite found in city |
|
Jul 06, 2008 - 2:10 PM - by Gazo
|
A parasite which can cause fatal illness in dogs has been found in Scotland for the first time, scientists have confirmed.
Experts said that the parasite Angiostrongylus vasorum, also known as the 'French heartworm', could be moving north because of climate change.
It is carried by slugs and snails which have increased in number in Scotland because of recent warm temperatures.
Vets in Glasgow recently treated a Weimaraner which had the parasite.
Signs that a dog is infected by the parasite include coughing, breathing difficulties and unexplained bleeding problems, including spontaneous bruising and bleeding into the eye.
It is thought the one-year-old dog became ill after swallowing a slug infected with the organism or eating grass with a fresh slug trail on it.
The parasite is normally found in south west England, but scientists said it could be moving northwards because of increasing temperatures.

Tikka .308 Lite T3 rifle test |
|

This Tikka T3 .308 conforms to the same high standards as its predecessors.
This T3 comes factory threaded to accept sound moderators a great idea for the British market.
Bolt and action
Tikka T3 rifles now share one common action size. Tikka T3 rifles come as a long-action design, and the different calibres are catered for by changes to the magazine.
This gives a good strong action, but it can add unwanted weight to the rifles shooting smaller calibres. It also results in a longer than usual bolt travel. In reality it is no problem, and you hardly notice the extra travel needed on this .308 Winchester rifle.
The solid one-piece machined steel action has the characteristic Tikka integral scope rails of 17mm diameter running its full length and it is drilled and tapped if you wish to fit other bases.
I used the Opti-lok Sako/Tikka mounts in 30mm, as these have a polymer insert that does not mark your exp... [Read More]

Pilot scheme to restrict sale of airguns in Scotland |
|
Jun 28, 2008 - 10:21 AM - by Gazo

Scottish justice secretary, Kenny MacAskill, has asked the Home Secretary’s permission to carry out a pilot scheme restricting the sale of airguns in Scotland.
Scottish justice secretary Kenny MacAskill has asked the Home Secretary’s permission to carry out a pilot scheme restricting the sale of airguns in Scotland.
In a letter to home secretary Jacqui Smith, Mr MacAskill called for an overhaul of the 1968 Firearms Act, which would restrict the sale of airguns. Ms Smith has previously rejected Mr MacAskill’s call for a review of gun law.
Mr MacAskill said: “Any reformed firearms regime must incorporate stronger controls on airguns given that they are used in around half of all firearms offences. While Westminster has refused to consider transferring legislative responsibility for firearms to Scotland, they should allow us to pilot such reforms if they are unwilling or unable to proceed themselves at this stage.”

Pest & Predator Control
Ours is a managed landscape and a managed wildlife. If we wish to maintain the richness of that wildlife we must manage it wisely.
The control of pest species are covered by strict laws and BASC produces codes of conduct to cover these practices. Agricultural pests - primarily rabbits and pigeons - are among the most important shooting quarry and without continual culling would inflict millions of pounds worth of damage on farmers' crops.
Control of certain bird species such as woodpigeon and crows must comply with the general licences issued in each country within the UK. It is extremely important that you read the licences and abide by their terms and conditions.

Wood pigeons 'flocking to towns' |
|
Jan 01, 2008 - 7:46 AM - by Gazo

Wood pigeons are flocking from the countryside to towns and cities because of changes in farming, a bird research charity has said. Increased garden bird feeding by people is also fuelling the migration, said the British Trust for Ornithology.
A survey by 16,500 householders found wood pigeons in 46% of London gardens, compared to just 27% for the more familiar feral pigeon.
The BTO said it was "amazing" how quickly the wood pigeon had adapted.
The trust's Garden Birdwatch survey encourages the public to report sightings on their own doorstep.
It says that a decade ago the wood pigeon did not appear in the list, but now it is the fourth most common species identified.

As well as outnumbering London's traditional pigeons,... [Read More]
