Default Wet weather shooting

i have no problem getting wet and laying about in mud, however, i'm still a bit nervous about getting the gun wet and muddy.
apart from giving it a coat of oil, is there any more i should do to protect it ?

As long as your gun is oiled and the stock waxed you should not have any problems using it in the wet.
Just remember to remove the action from the stock and giving it a good drying out.
Paying attention to screws on and around scope mounts, I used to nic the mrs hairdryer to make sure everything was dry before putting it away.
