For the classic best FT gun ever it would have to be the Protarget, even today they pop up and put in an unbelievable score at comps.

To the cruf of it IMO;

Regulated or unreglated ?
Regulated everytime if you are serious about FT

What manfacturer?
FWB (would say Walther but they are handist, no left handed versions)

What model?
P70

What Calibre?
.177 No point playing FT with anything else.

What Ammo?
JSB - Good, well priced and consistent

& YOUR REASONS WHY
Works pretty much out the box. Can be adjusted to suit almost any shape of shooter. Doesn't go wrong (hexed myself now). Have not had to spend a fortune on "bits" to make it work or shoot straight.
Downside is the weight.

Ultimately whatever suits you best and you can get on with is the answer. Whoever recommended going to a club and trying lots of guns got it spot on.

Starting out in FT though, I'd still go for a Protarget and spend any available money on a better scope, still convinced the scope makes more difference then the gun.

Cheers

Yes, I'm sure your right about the scope.

I've never had any luck with Air Arms guns, every one I've owned has been duff. Some problem or other. Have totally frustrated me.

Do you know where I can buy a Feinwerkbau, I'm left handed too. Any idea of what I would expect to pay?

I've tried lots of guns, still can't make up my mind. always feel like I need to use one for 2 or 3 months before making a decision, of course that is not possible.

Thought a Steyr LG110 FT might be the go.

Thanks for your comments, the same for all who have responded.

Cheers Pete

Thanks for all your comments. I have now purchased a Steyr LG110 FT Connect. I'll let you know how I get on.

But keep voting Folks it's interesting to see what people think & why. Not just for me but I'm sure other folk will find this poll interesting especially if they are new to the sport.

I've been using the Steyr LG110 for some months now. I have to say it is a very consistent gun. I like it very much.

I have A Falcon Merlin 10-40x56 scope mounted with Leupold QRW high mounts. I like the scope a lot, for the money it is a great scope. Not as clear as a Leupold at 40mag. It's rangefinding ability is accurate.
I'm not sure why they are not making them anymore.

The only thing I don't like about the Steyr is having to remove the cylinder to charge it. I'm sure there will be wear eventually, especially as I practice most days.

I've also removed the trigger shoe as I couldn't get on with it.

Have also removed the hamster and am finding that much better, especially for kneelers & standers

Hydrographics near York will fit an Air Arms quick fill to the cylinder for a modest sum which will make it more ergonomic.

Thanks for that info.

UPDATE:

Have now got a Leupold Competition 40x45 mounted with Leupold PRW mounts.
Have changed the trigger for a MEC trigger & added a MEC/Centra hand-stop with a 'Tactical Intervention' Quick-Cuff sling.
Still like the Steyr LG110 a great deal. It is as accurate & consistent as any gun about in my opinion.

Do wish they would make a true left hand action, but can't have everything I guess.

Have been doing quite well in GP's this season, far better than I thought I would, for my first year back after 12 years. Currently running 4th in C Grade.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion,it may upset some but I feel quite strongly about FT
HFT, I can see the appeal, you can take a 'sporting' air rifle of any shape or size along & compete, however FT,it makes my blood boil
Spending a fortune on on a super duper regged rifle that has a feather hanging off the end to gauge the ungaugable wind, with enough add ons, hampsters & ugly adjustable buttpads to sink a ship, then top it off with a scope that's capable of picking up a bluebottle off a sheeps knackers at a 1000 yrds, then to make it worse, weigh, wash, caress your pellets before bringing them to a gentle heat with the wifes hairdryer, then lubricating them with the sweat from a virgins armpit,& all to knock a ferkin target over at 50 yrds ARGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGGG GGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH H!!!!!
As you can tell i don't go a bundle on FT like.

Ahh well each to their own, can't say I'm too keen on laying on my belly in the mud.

A bit off the thread topic anyhow.
