FAC = Fire Arms Certificate and is needed to own firearms, or in our case, air rifles with a muzzle energy over 12 ft/lbs, or air pistols with a muzzle energy of over 6 ft/lbs.
An FAC isn't needed for air rifles under 12ft/lbs or air pistols under 6ft/lbs.
Most sporting air rifles are close to the limit, being in the region of 11.5 ft/lbs, which is plenty enough to kill rabbits etc at reasonable ranges of upto 40 meters or so.

it also means that the police have to give approval for a firearm to be used on any land you want to use a FAC rated airgun on so you cannot just take it to the local farm and tap raddits as you can with a normal air gun.

A pistol over 6ft lb cannot be owned at all.
Not since 1997 when handguns were banned.

Only if your FAC isn't an 'open' ticket.
An open ticket means judgement on the land's clearance is bestowed upon the licence holder.
A 'closed' ticket needs the Chief of police to make that judgement.

I don't know about that [  ] so much.
My first FAC was for an airgun [a rapid]. The ticket was a closed one, so I had to contact the Firearms Licensing Dept. for each additional bit of land I wanted to shoot it on. 
When my ticket came up for renewal, I put in for some variations and I also suggested to the FEO that an open ticket would be dead handy as I'm looking for extra land.
My ticket came back with the .22lr and .17HMR on an open ticket.
