Depends on what sort of shooting you're doing really, for a bit of plinking open sights are a fun challenge. A red dot can be handy when you need to let off a fast shot - i.e. ratting situations but as you've found yourself most of the time a decent scope is the only real choice.
As to what's more enjoyable - well, it comes down to whether you get more enjoyment from trying to hit something against all the odds or from actually hitting something. Hitting stuff does it for me
