Yes they are tough. I got one the other day, yes daytime ! they are all over the place now that the crops are in, and it took a couple of well placed shots to send him on his way. I'm using up an old tin of webley .22 pellets that came with the gun. They are round heads but don't seem to be very good at taking down the rats. So I will be getting a pellet upgrade shortly.
