Tell me about it. I have desperately been looking for a patch of deer stalking closer to home. Either it's way over priced or I get a simple no.
I'll give you five tips that have always worked for me when looking for some rabbiting or vermin shooting.
1) Don't bother asking in the spanking clean well kept farms. Look for something a little dilapidated.
2) Don't go telling the farmer his own business. That means DON'T say 'I notice you have a major crow problem'. It's a little like telling your misses she is looking fat!
3) Don't go after the cream of the crop. Meaning that if you turn up at a farm in late august looking for pigeon shooting, your most likely to be told no. Other people are going to be there shooting the pigeons and may have helped the farmer all year for this bumper crop of birds. There isn't a way on earth he will risk upsetting them for you to have the pick of the season and never bother to return.
4) Pick the right time! Don't turn up a 1pm on a Sunday! Don't ask for fox shooting permission in January but by the end of April you might well be in will a chance! Pick the time and fit it in with the running of the farm.
5) See yourself as the farmer will see you. Camouflage? Jeans and a Black sabbath T-shirt? Bright red trainers? Music blasting out of your car? Office suit ? First impressions do count! Your asking someone to let you shoot guns in their back garden; exactly what would you say and look for if someone wanted to shoot guns in your back garden.
